08/10/2015What is a “dedomed” LED is and how it increases the beam intensity?

If you’ve ever heard about dedomed LEDs you probably want to know the answer to these two main questions:

1. What is so special in these LEDs?
2. If they are so special why aren’t they widely applied by flashlights’ manufacturers?

Let's clarify these things.

“Dedomed” LEDs

The DIY technic of making an industrially produced LED dedomed, i.e. cutting the silicone dome off, is known for a couple of years already. Some flashlight “geeks” customize their lights themselves to improve the performance of their favorite models. At the pictures below you can see how a LED looks like after dedoming:

Dedoming a LED is a difficult procedure that requires precision and accuracy and “hand-made” dedomed LEDs often appear to look rough and crude. But even though this operation allows to achieve great results: flashlights with dedomed LEDs provide beam intensity almost twice as high as usual and beam distance reaches 150%! Impressive, isn't it?

 

So why aren’t dedomed LEDs widely used in industrial production?

Applying dedomed LEDs in serial production of LED flashlights has some negative consequences that most manufacturers prefer to avoid:

  • The silicone dome serves as a lens so depriving of it results in output decrease. Dedomed LEDs emit light of higher intensity but lower output.

  • As a LED is protected by a lens it undergoes usual destructive processes caused by high temperature and oxygen faster. That means that the lifespan of the LED decreases and as a result will be much shorter than 50000 hours.

  • As the emitting surface of dedomed LEDs is not mechanically protected, there is a risk of defacing it in course of assembling of the product.

  • The technical complexity of dedoming process will highly influence the self-cost of flashlights and make them more expensive at the market.

Is there any way to avoid these problems?

Yes. The world largest LED manufacturer, Cree Inc. released a new XP-L High Intensity LED that enables flashlights’ producers to gain the advantages of dedomed LEDs and avoid their disadvantages at the same time. To obtain that Cree applied a different plain covering at the emitting surface. The pros of XP-L High Intensity LEDs are:

  • They have almost the same brightness as usual XP-L LEDs 

  • They have the same lifespan of 50000 hours as usual XP-L LEDs

  • The emitting surface is mechanically protected for safe assembling

  • They show great performance: beam distance of XP-L High Intensity flashlights is 1.5 times as long and beam intensity is twice as high as that of flashlights with usual XP-L LED.

Thus the solution is finally found. Unfortunately, at the moment these LEDs are still more expensive than usual and there’s a problem of finding a required amount of them at the market. 

But nevertheless we’ve decided to apply these LEDs in serial production of our flashlights as soon as possible. Furthermore, we have been already producing a limited edition of our legendary models – Predator, Barracuda & Dobermann – customized with XP-L High Intensity LEDs.
